GLOBAL POPULATION WASTE
It is estimated that the world generates 2.01 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually, with at least 33 percent of that—extremely conservatively and not managed in an environmentally safe manner at all. Worldwide, waste generated per person per day averages 0.74 kilogram but ranges widely, from 0.11 to 4.54 kilograms. Though this only account for 16 percent of the world’s population, high-income countries generate about 34 percent, or 683 million tons, of the world’s waste.
The East Asia and Pacific region is generating most of the world’s waste, at 23 percent, and the Middle East and North Africa region is producing the least in absolute terms, at 6 percent. However, the fastest growing regions are Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, where, by 2050, total waste generation is expected to more than triple.
To say that we have a huge problem is an understatement. Being on the road for the past couple of months have opened my eyes to waste management issues region to region. Seeing animals, both on land and in the ocean, struggle with human waste and pollution. The big question is who will catapult us into the right direction? Consumers or producers along with retailers.
Read Trends in Solid Waste Management
South Africans generate roughly an estimate of 54,2 million tons of general (municipal, commercial, and industrial) waste per year. Of this 54,2 million of tons of waste, a maximum of only 10% is recycled or recovered for other uses, whilst at least 90% is landfilled or dumped. Read more...
It is said that the the world produces enough waste annually to fill 822,000 Olympic-sized pools and this number is increasing.
LANDFILLS
Overview of Landfills
Landfills are sites where waste is disposed of and buried. They are a common method of waste management but can have significant environmental impacts. Here’s a breakdown of various aspects related to landfills:
Top Ten Biggest Landfills in the World
- Great Pacific Garbage Patch - While not a traditional landfill, this floating collection of plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean is one of the largest accumulations of waste.
- Al-Azraq Landfill, Jordan - One of the largest in the Middle East.
- Dharavi Landfill, Mumbai, India - A major landfill site serving the dense population of Mumbai.
- Ghazipur Landfill, Delhi, India - Known for its massive size and significant environmental issues.
- Sudokwon Landfill, Seoul, South Korea - One of the largest in Asia, covering a vast area.
- Laogang Landfill, Shanghai, China - A large landfill site handling waste for one of the world’s most populous cities.
- Bantar Gebang Landfill, Jakarta, Indonesia - One of the largest in Southeast Asia.
- Ward 92 Landfill, South Africa - Notably large for South Africa.
- Puente Hills Landfill, Los Angeles, USA - One of the largest landfills in the United States, now closed.
- Fresh Kills Landfill, New York City, USA - Once the largest landfill in the world, it has been closed and converted into a park.
Landfills in South Africa
- Ward 92 Landfill, Johannesburg - A large landfill site in Gauteng.
- Kya Sand Landfill, Johannesburg - Another major landfill site in Johannesburg.
- Durban Landfill - Serving the city of Durban.
- Cape Town Landfill - Serving Cape Town and surrounding areas.
- Pietermaritzburg Landfill - Serving Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal.
Issues with Landfills
- Environmental Pollution:
- Leachate: Liquid that forms when waste breaks down in landfills, which can contaminate soil and groundwater.
- Methane Emissions: Landfills produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas, which contributes to climate change.
- Odors: Decomposing waste can produce unpleasant smells.
- Impact on Waterways:
- Contamination: Leachate can seep into rivers and oceans, leading to pollution.
- Microplastics: Waste breakdown, especially plastics, can introduce microplastics into water bodies.
- Soil Contamination:
- Heavy Metals: Waste can contain toxic metals that leach into the soil.
- Organic Decomposition: The breakdown of organic matter can alter soil chemistry and affect plant life.
Types of Landfills
- Sanitary Landfills: Engineered to minimize environmental impact, including liners to prevent leachate leakage and systems to capture methane.
- Open Dumps: Less regulated and can lead to significant environmental issues.
- Secure Landfills: Designed for hazardous waste with extensive containment measures.
- Construction and Demolition Landfills: Specifically for construction debris and materials.
Landfills Made Up of Clothing
Clothing Waste: Often ends up in landfills where textiles contribute to bulk waste. Specific landfills dedicated to clothing are less common, but textile waste is a significant problem in general landfills. Clothing can be particularly problematic due to:
- Non-Biodegradable Materials: Many textiles are made from synthetic fibers that do not break down easily.
- Toxic Chemicals: Some textiles are treated with dyes and chemicals that can leach into the environment.
Summary
Landfills play a critical role in waste management but pose various environmental challenges. From the world's largest landfills to local sites in South Africa, the issues of pollution, contamination, and greenhouse gas emissions are significant concerns. Understanding and managing these impacts is crucial for reducing the environmental footprint of landfills and improving waste management practices.
