Rescued from a lion breeding farm that breeds lions for canned and captive hunting. This image is part of a series of images for the Earth Alive 365 Awareness Portfolio for Near Threatened & Endangered Species. PETRO DIAMANT & EARTH ALIVE 365 do not promote nor encourage taking images with animals. This image is used to raise awareness on current issues pertaining to the captive bred lions and wild lions in SA and is used to educate people about the lion breeding industry. We do not promote nor encourage for people to take images with wild lions and captive bred lions nor is this a promotion for  tourist establishments that offer lion cubbing or lion petting.

THESE PHOTOS  ARE PART OF AN AWARENESS CAMPAIGN  ADVOCATING AGAINST :

The Lion Bone Trade, The Big Cat Bone Trade, Trophy Hunting, Canned Hunting, Captive Hunting, Green Hunts, Lions in Zoos, Lions in Circuses, The Trade in Lion Body Parts and Skin. THE EARTH ALIVE 365 AWARENESS PORTFOLIO FOR NEAR THREATENED & ENDANGERED SPECIES will include images of various species under threat of becoming extinct. The portfolio will be part of live exhibitions and once completed we would like to exhibit in China, America and Taiwan as these are the countries where the illegal trade and legal trade in endangered species are most active. The aim is to prevent lions from being hunted and killed for Trophies and The Lion Bond Trade. This was a voluntary collaboration initiative advocating for lions and white lions and for the South African Government to ban canned, captive, green and trophy hunting and to end the trade in lion parts. Kindly contact Petro Diamant should you wish to know more. * Take Note - Due to some unforeseen events. I am no longer able to continue with my original plans for this project. I encourage individuals who are in a position to help lions and rescue them from breeding facilities and the lion bone trade to get into contact with organizations who are fighting for a Ban on the Lion Breeding Industry and the The Lion Bone Trade. May lions that are bred and kept in captivity be given a chance to live unharmed for the rest of their remaining time on Earth.

Lions, Canned Hunting, Captive Hunting, Green Hunting, The Illegal and or Legal Wildlife Trade in Exotic Species and body parts

The fight for the protection of Africa's Lions continue. Be it for canned hunts or the slaughter of lions for the bone trade, South Africa's Lions are in desperate need of protection. While international conservation and law enforcement efforts have made tiger bone increasingly scarce, "canned" hunting and poaching has seen the demand and supply of lion trophies, skins and other derivatives soar. Lions are replacing the illegal wildlife trade of Tigers. Asian demand for tiger wine and other products is creating a crisis for big cats across the world and South Africa is feeding the trade. The proliferation of lion and tiger farms in South Africa and the associated trade undermines enforcement efforts to end illegal tiger trade and stimulates demand for tiger parts and derivatives.

"There is significant evidence that South Africa’s legal trade in captive-bred lion trophies is accelerating the slaughter of wild lions for their parts in neighboring countries and is, in fact, increasing demand for wild lion parts in Asia - a market that did not exist before South Africa started exporting lion bones in 2007. It is irresponsible to establish [a] policy that could further imperil wild lions - already in precipitous decline throughout much of Africa - when the facts are clear; South Africa’s lion breeding industry makes absolutely no positive contribution to conserving lions and, indeed, further imperils them," says Dr Paul Funston, senior director of wild cat conservation group Panthera’s Lion Program. He warned that the legalization of a trade in lion bones would stimulate the market and endanger both captive and wild lion populations.

The wilder the lion the more in danger.

"Currently, an estimate 8 000 predators are being held in cages or confined areas, and none of this has anything to do with conservation. If we don’t act now, that number could well be over 12 000 within the next few years." -www.bloodlions.org

" I wanted to work with a lion that was rescued from the canned and captive hunting industry. I wanted to show the world that regardless of how these lions came into existence that they are beautiful and precious. Although they will never be able to live in the wild or so I have been told. These lions deserve love and respect, a place in this world where they are safe and protected and not abused, hunted and killed. They are worth rescuing and more valuable alive than dead and they do not deserve the cruelty and violence inflicted on them. " - PETRO DIAMANT

I am not promoting nor suggesting that individuals go and rescue lions for the sake of rescuing. There are Sanctuaries and Ethical Lion Conservation Organizations that you can support either through funding, volunteering or support in rescue and fund the care taking of the rescued lions at their sanctuaries at their establishments. Do your research as there are many organizations posing as lion sanctuaries and lion parks who conserve the species but are not.

Helena Swart,  Co-Collaborator for THE LIONS RAY

Helena approached me in 2017 at  festival and asked whether she could be part of EARTH ALIVE 365 to represent a specie. Lions being her choice. This was and to date is still one of the most challenging species to advocate for. With years of hard work by many animal and animal rights organizations the fight for lions continue. On 02 May 2021 the newspaper headlines read "South Africa to ban breeding lions in captivity for hunting", "South Africa to ban lion breeding for cub petting", Captive lion breeding should be banned, Barbara Creecy says" and "SA TO BAN BREEDING LIONS IN CAPTIVITY FOR HUNTING".

THE LIONS RAY was used to advocate along with Animal Rights organizations at marches, festivals both local and international to Ban The Lion Breeding Industry and end the horrible blood sport of hunting and also the  trade in lion bone, skull and skin.

"When there is so much that requires our attention and conservation of habitat and species is placed at the bottom of the list, every action, however big or small must be welcomed and celebrated when it is in favor of The Earth and The Animals especially the non-human animals. No matter where you are in the world, no matter what your profession is, a conversation about conservation and at that ethical conservation must be included in your daily social interactions. So many people have no idea what is happening in parts of the world and so to raise awareness and to be a voice for those who experience great injustice and cruelty is a necessity. We can not and must  not continue on this reckless path of annihilation. There is no coming back from the dead and no return of a specie when they are extinct." - Petro Diamant
